Situateded on the slopes of Sasso Pelo, in the floodplain of the river Liro, called "Poncia", and stretched a gulf in which water reflects its history, it's in front of Legnone mountain, the church of Piona and at the begin of Valtellina where Adda River flows into the Lake Como.

Thanks to the natural fortification due to the "Sasso del Castello", a huge mass of rock overlooking the lake, the area was settled before the arrival of the Romans. During the city, around the fortress, developed the fortified village, which contained within the walls of the houses, the well and the church, in which the population took refuge in case of enemy attack.
